Hey, King

Is that a '74 or a '47?  Or a '47 cab on a '74 frame? How's the hand now?

What "size" of IH truck did you start with? Did you make up the "monster" tires by welding the (what I think are) 8 bolt centers into the bigger rims, or can you get them? Did you make any mods to the truck to give lower gears etc.?

There's an old pickup cab in the bushes at the farm. Giving me ideas (which is the *last* thing I need right now). Couple your truck idea, with some of the neat stuff those guys in Finland are doing and lots of fun!!!

Cool rig!

cheers, Andrew

andrew, once again you have an eye for detail. yes those are semi truck rims. i took 11:00 x 20:00 truck tires, cut the centres out, didn't even remove the tires, just used the garden hose (i don't even have a garden??????) then take the dually rimms from a 1953 chevy and weld them in the rim. just measure the crap out of it to find centre. top speed on monster truck is 40 miles an hour, tire shimmy is the least of your problems at that speed. LOL

the next problem i had was the 1953 chevy rim has a smaller centre so what to do. i have no lathe (nearest one is 300 km away at $100 per hour) i used my grinder and placed a disc that was a bit larger then what i needed. as the grinder held flat to the rim the old blade is eaten away and next thing you know it is thru and the hole is about the right size. it is very important because all the weight and shock from jumping on to cars is on the hubs not the lug nuts. i took my time and got it right on all 4 rims.

the inside, nothing fancy because no one sees it.

the IH frame drops down quite a bit so for the cab to clear we went with this h beam that was in a garage fire. so that is way it is a little short. i used what i had.

the reason for the second frame is also for stregth. in the 1970s they had these big holes in the frame so it would collaspe when in an accident. but we don't want that. LOL

see how high the transfer case is, this is what makes the IH product the best for ground clearance.

note the suspenion is all origan, so the drive shaft angle and everything is the same. everyone who jacks up truck have drive shaft problems for some reason. but i left it all factory and don't have a problem, well maybe, LOL

this is my problem is the snow plow for opening winter oads when the ice is bad. the monster truck will push a 43" wind row on 6" of ice. the snow and weight of the truck some time out weigh what the ice will allow. so it breaks thru, no problem. the front rearend wants to twist and off goes the drive shaft. i have picked it a couple time about 100 feet to the side of monster truck. so to keep the drive shaft on, the front rearend is chained in solid so no movment. then the drive shaft will stay on.

Joey,
thanks for the info. That's a neat truck. The '74 IH was a one ton 4x4 or something was it?

It's good to know that it can be done and the sizes work out just about OK.

I have a trolley that I build to move the in-laws houseboat that uses old truck axles that had 10x20 tires with old five stud rims. I blew a tire and have to change it. The split rims are so old that tire places won't touch them. I have a couple of newer rims and I was thinking of welding the centers into them. It's good to know that you can get away with welding with the tires on.

I still haven't ruled out trying to change the tire though. I figure if I cut the old blown one off first, then I can have at the split rim more easily and sandblast/grind/soak it to get things moving. It's not a high priority until I steal the trolley back to use as a bale wagon!

I think I found one more rim at the farm so I might have a go. We were at the load limit for the (old) tires, so I might like to go with duals when/if I have to move it back to the water again.

The other would be to make rims much like yours if I end up building some tractor/vehicle using my old ford rear end. Then I could put those hubs on the trolley too if I have to move it, and will get my ground clearance back.

Hope you have "fun" (oh yea, you're working this time) 4x4'ing.

cheers, Andrew

ok my computer is done baking cookies i guess, aorund the "KINGDOM" we try and use things that are common o when they break or need to be replaced it is easy. we can us lots of military or metric stuff don't because we always think of the next time when we are going to have to fix it. which is more likely to be at -45C below or in a mud hole with lots of bugs flying around, LOL

KoO, I would be more afraid of the ice trips than the water. At least with water ya know what your gettin lol.

You sure do get some good finds. Do you sell any of that stuff, or just use it for parts, and or equipment for the ice roads? You must be able to cross the ice up there with heavy equipment by now huh?
