Anyone know the initial diameter of work piece for a die of 1NC SAE.

Also, anyone have any suggestions on getting the die perfectly square for a hand held die holder. I can't screw this up on this project. For a tap I usually use a drill press, but for a die I usually eye ball it but I need more accuracy this time. No lathe available.

     Thanks.!

You should be able to thread full inch but 10 or 20 thou
undersize would make it a lot easier to start and turn the die.
If you can chamfer the end its a lot easier to get the die to
bite.
If it needs to be perfectly square a lathe is the answer. What
are you threading?

The tap drill is 7/8 or .875 which should be the same as a die ID. as for keeping the die square with the work maybe a spring and a big washer to hold the die wrench in alinement . If the die is adjustable it might help to open it up a little to let it start a little easier.

1.00 outside diameter

the die will cut the bottom root of the thread to approx. .875

good luck keeping the die perpendicular. the higher end die holders will sometimes have a guide on the rear to help position the die correctly as it cuts

Caveat: I've not tried this, it's a thought experiment:

Drill a 1" hole as square as you can through a piece of thick bar stock, aluminum, or maybe even a piece wood and slip that over the workpiece. When you go to start the thread, hold this up high enough that the flat face of your die and die stock contact the flat face of the block.  It won't guarantee you're centered, but it might keep you from threading at an angle?

If it's critical, how about trying several different approaches on a piece of extra stock before you do the "real thing"?
